Matti Alfonzetti- "Shake my blood"

Modern melodic Hard rock by one of the most underrated voices, Mark Alfonzetti. For those of you who are unaware of his musical past, he has his tenures as led singer in bands such as BAM BAM BOYS, JAGGED EDGE , SKINTRADE, ROAD TO RUIN. With a raw, yet melodic voice,that brings him to the category of singers like Andi Derris, David Reece he releases this solo work, where furious melodic hard rock  like "Shake my blood"trades places with soulful mid tempo songs like "Say Goodbye". Alfonzetti is a genuine Swedish melodicHard rock singer with his heavier moments, his fondness for the modern rock sound but a soft spot for the 80s AOR scene. The tenure in JAGGED EDGE left his mark in songs like the funky, groovy 'Who do you think you are". Bluesy and melodic, in the vein of MR BIG, late years EUROPE , Alfonzetti, brings the musical dreams to life in songs like 'Sanctified" where the groove meets the melody at a song that screams for airplay. This time Alfonzetti, who has gone back to his roots and together with Mikael Hujanen, Peter Forss, Johan Norgren, Henrik Bergqvist, Joel Sahlin and his son Dante created an album full of bluesy , yet FM oriented Hard rock. 'Digging in the dirt' with its melodic bridge and its heavy blues chorus is a fine example of the album's orientation. 

 

 

If you are into bands like COLD CHISEL you may understand my point of view.A melodic, yet bluesy,deep voice that has the versatility to serve both the FM as the more down to earth blues rock directions,allow Alfonzetti move in to various musical directions keeping the groove and the fire alive, without been utterly traditional or over the top contemporary. But it's the covers where he shows his own unique interpretation on songs we all know and love like at 'Don't believe a word" by THIN LIZZY ,where he transforms the song to a piano led, heartbreaking ballad, stripped down to the bones, leaving him and a piano."Kill my blues" could be easily at any of the post reunion EUROPE albums and been among the best songs they have written. In the same vein of hard rock with a bluesy touch, comes "Evil woman", muscular and anthemic.To put it simple EUROPE,SHOUT, MR BIG, WHITESNAKE, JAGGED EDGE, you like any of the aforementioned bands ,then you are obliged to buy "Shake my soul" period.

Me and that man- "New man,New songs, Same shit Vol2"

Third times a charm and Nergal knails it one more time.Along with a stellar list of participants , expected Myrkyr, Gary Holt and unexpected Blaze Baley, he gives us his own successful recipe of Dark, wave, alternative rock, folk,country and Americana, with some metal elements and praise the Lord (Dark or not) he is a winner.From the opener "Black hearse Cadillac' the last song we heard Hank Von Hell, a chilling moment as the album was released the day we were informed on the death of the Great Norwegian singer, a creepy , chanting introduction, and soul searching lyrics, a cry for love and attention-who really gives a fuck and listen to the lyrics and their meaning for the artist ,in his real life?the album set high standards as usual.A help from GHOSTs Papa V...Mary Goore and BOC meets Me and that man rocking over a James Bond movie theme.A blues out of the Gary Moore songbook is "All hope is gone" where instead of Johnny Cash, Blaze Bayley, yes the ex WOLFSBANE,IRON MAIDEN singer along with Gary Holt (Exodus) and Jeff Mantas Dunn (V) gives the best song of the album, a heartbreaking, emotional overcharged blues anthem. Americana and country & Western rules at "Witches don't fall in love"."Losing my blues"  and if MOTORHEAD would think to play blues, this is how they would sound with Chris Holmes (ex WASP giving this dirty 80s ,sunset strip soloing). 

 

 

 

Dave Vinsent (Morbid angel) does what he knows best at ' 'Year of the snake'', thriving the song from a low ride to self destruction to the depths of personal abandonment and misery, standing against everyone and paying the price. The haunting violin solo makes the song an Appalachian cry for freedom, a mountain song from the mountain of the dead and unbowed.Michael Graves (MISFITS) gives a stunning performance at the hypnotic, mesmerizing "Blues and cocaine" a song that makes the term "desert rock" at least obsolete with its internal, sheer, demonic power.Randy Blythe takes the mic at "Silver Halide echoes" and gives us a modern Moricone song for a western where no one survives, despite motivations and moral grounds.What makes Me and that man a project,everyone loves is that Nergal takes musicians from mostly the extreme sound territory and present them in a totally different package like Alicia  White Glutz and Dave Townsend at 'Goodbye' a haunting dark Americana ballad. The closer 'Got your tongue" with our "own" Chris Georgiadis is a great example of the alternative rock spirit that broke the limits between metal and rock in the 90s and still releases great songs to dance with. 

 

Me and that man for the third time produce an album that other artists need a whole life to conceive. We love their work and hope they'll continue to bring such dark pleasures to our lustful ears.

When rivers meet- 'Saving grace'

 

 

The killer duet of Grace and Aaron Bond from the UK returns to remind us of how good, soulful blues rock has to be played. 'He ll drive you crazy' is a song that lets the gutsy vocals of Grace Bond reign over the fuzzy guitar all together in a Zeppelin-esque piece of music. If you already had their first album you know that WHEN RIVER MEETS are a band who wear their heart on their sleeve. They like their music, groovy have a soft spot for the blues and take the lead from where BAD COMPANY, Joplin, SAINT JUDE and less THUNDER (they are still active0)left it. 

 

 

'Don't tell me goodbye '' has the 'Wild horses" /country rock/americana (sic) feeling  with both musicians taking turns at the vocals and yes we love the emotional burden it carries. Groovy as hell at 'Do you remember my name" they keep the game simple and effective, aiming straight to the heart, without imitating WHITE STRIPES, BLACK KEYS etc but with a more alternative twist.Modern blues with a soulful touch is also the main theme at "Have no doubt about it"."Eye of the hurricane" has the lead vocals roles changing with Aaron coming upfront assorting by some haunting backing vocals by Grace in a dark Americana song.The temperature rises with the rocking "Testify", an in your face rocker with some great backing vocals enforcing the final result.Grece bond gives a thrilling performance at "Shoot the breeze", a groovy blues rocker while the tempo gets funkier at "Lost and found' and the song a bit more commercial and contemporary. 

 

Second album and the Bond family getting stronger and stronger at the songwriting and delivering departments. A Modern rock album that looks at the blues and winks at the more contemporary sounds, always within the rock context.They have the Grace with them and we hope for music s sake to keep having it by their side.

Dirty Kings-"Crown jewel"

When NWOBHM meets US hard rock with an alternative twist, you have DIRTY KINGS. Electric and eclectic, their sound is defined by the characteristic vocals who gives a bit gothic, a bit alternative color to their songs. Check out "Locomotive heart" and "Marquee lady" to understand my point. Imagine T.SO.L  meets DIAMOND HEAD and early DEF LEPPARD with a touch of ANGELS and you might understand, not to mention some early Ted Nugent guitar riffing that demolishes walls. 

 

 

 

Heavy, bit melodic and most of all original , it may be a bit more than enough at some points,but at the end is an album that combines in your face aesthetic with the recklessness of LA and the muscle of Australian hard rock dressed in the leather and spandex of the early 80s at the UK metal scene. Colorado has its own way  to produce metal with heart and balls.

HOUSTON-"IV"

 

Sweden rocks, rules ,reigns etc. Another album, another success and West Coast AOR lovers can laid back and enjoy their martini along the album. From SURVIVOR to Robert Tepper, melodic lines, keyboards, sing along choruses, razor sharp guitars and heartbroken lyrics about lost loves and inner strength "Hero" are all over the album. When you have songs like "You re still the woman", "Heartbreaker", "I will not give in despair". "Such is love" and "A lifetime in a moment" there are not enough words to describe the feelings created when you listen to them. 

 

 

Sugar coated, gold gilded AOR a mix between SURVIVOR, TRILLION, 101 SOUTH and FOREIGNER, this album delivers like a true IV. On the contrary to their  80s origins, the more they mature, the better albums they release, unlike "Rocky' and 'Rambo' series. So rent a convertible, a big boobs escort, a yacht and live the album to the limit.

Yola-'Stand for myself"

An album that starts with a soulful "Barely alive" and keeps rising the temperature with some RnB, soul, rock tunes that wink at Stax and the golden 70s all in favor of the great passionate, emotional voice of Yola. The dance floor favorite "Dancing away in tears" with the disco overtones, the honky tonk "Diamond studded shoes" or the laid back, "Be my friend" a song that could be easily at any Free album."Great divide" is another example of the versatility of her voice and the easiness she embraces different genres, a sugar coated ballad about heartbreak straight from the 60s songbooks. 'Starlight" is another jazz infused soul ballad with a dark dance twist and Yola's voice is as uplifting as ever. A bit more up tempo and modern "If i had to do it all again" is a modern pop song ready for the pop radio stations. At the same page/pace is "Now you are here, the smokey joints have been replaced by lounges with well dressed guys, but the warmth of Yola's voice is here even if the tempo has become more contemporary.

 

 

 

Yola is Bristol born and Nashville based but her voice is universal and her influences across decades and genres. So she is easily moves from the lounges to a 60s anthem like "whatever you want" with the slide guitar and the country overtones giving the tone."Break the bough" continues the up tempo ,soul effort, raising the roof of the joint with its intensity. It has to be "Like a photograph" for Yola to let her most sensitive side take over, once more in this countrified, jazzy ballad with the strings taking over like a Burt Bucharach's song, proving her voice range and her abilities to deliver emotionally, regardless the genre. The album is closing with "Stand for myself" a modern soul rock album where Yola makes her statement as a female voice with passion and nothing to prove to anyone ,but her ability to rock any place. In our days of plastic pop and lounge soul for elevators, Yola delivers music from the soul for the soul.

 Βιβλία και μουσικές (προτάσεις) για τα Χριστούγεννα 2021

Ακόμη μια χρονιά το Social Distortion Radio show -www.Ertopen.com/ κάθε Δευτέρα 2100-2300, σε συνεργασία με το Basbayiannis Book &Music Tales, ανοίγει τα κιτάπια του και σας προσκαλεί για αγορές παλιών και νέων βιβλίων και μουσικών που θα συντροφεύσουν τις γιορτές σας και θα βοηθήσουν το 2022, να ξεκινήσει με αναγνώσματα και ήχους που αξίζουν του χρόνου και της προσοχής σας. 

Υπεύθυνος των επιλογών, ο Στέλιος Μπασμπαγιάννης και το "όποιο" αισθητήριο, κριτήριο, γούστο έχει παραμείνει αλώβητο στο τέλος  μιας ακόμα δύσκολης χρονιάς.

1.«Ως τις άκρες της γης» Έντουαρντ J. Λάρσον (Ψυχογιός)

1909, τρεις ριψοκίνδυνες αποστολές για την κατάκτηση του Βόρειου, του Νότιου Πόλου και της κορυφής του κόσμου (Κ2). Τρία θέματα ξεχασμένα στον σημερινό κόσμο. Τρία θέματα που στις αρχές του 20ου αιώνα αποτέλεσαν πηγή για σκέψη, φαντασία, όνειρα, αγώνες θυσίες, ίντριγκες και αμφισβητήσεις.

Κρύο κρυοπαγήματα, εξάντληση, ελπίδα και πείσμα σκιαγραφούν απλούς ανθρώπους επιστήμονες που κάποιοι σε ηλικία των πενήντα ετών αναζητούν την δόξα , δίχως να εγκαταλείπουν αλλά και χωρίς κάποιές φορές να προσφέρουν. Το απέραντο λευκό της αρκτικής και της Ανταρκτικής, τα στρώματα πάγου, η απομόνωση, οι συνεχείς κίνδυνοι, ξεπηδάνε από τις σελίδες του βιβλίου, κάνοντας την κατάκτηση του τρίτου πόλου του Κ2 ενδιαφέρουσα αλλά αδύναμη , μπροστά στην απομόνωση και την προσπάθεια των Πίρι, Σάκλετον. Τρως μαζί τους το τελευταίο κομμάτι μπισκότου, ονειρεύεσαι λουκούλλεια γεύματα, σκοτώνεις το τελευταίο σκυλί και περπατάς ως την τελευταία αποθήκη , ελπίζοντας να δεις το πλοίο της διάσωσης να σε περιμένει. Η απόδειξη του κατορθώματος, θα έχει μάρτυρα την φωτογραφία και τα ημερολόγια της αποστολής και αυτό είναι και το τρωτό σημείο, των εξερευνητών που ηθελημένα ή άθελα τους βλπ Πίρι δεν προνόησαν να έχουν όργανα ακριβούς μέτρησης του γεωγραφικού πλάτους και μήκους δίνοντας λαβή στις αμφισβητήσεις. Ονειρεύεσαι σαν τον Πίρι, άρθρα σε εφημερίδες και δόξα σαν τους Σάκλετον, Ντέιβιντ, νιώθεις τα χέρια του κόσμου που σε σηκώνουν στους ώμους σαν τον Μόσον και τελικά ξέρεις ότι λιγότερο από μια δεκαετία μετά, ο ανθρώπινος ηρωισμός θα βρει άλλο πεδίο στις πεδιάδες της Φλάνδρας και οι πόλοι θα μείνουν ξεχασμένοι, μέχρι η οικολογική καταστροφή να τους επαναφέρει στην δημοσιότητα.

 Το «Ως τις άκρες τη γης» είναι από τα βιβλία που θα κάνουν τον έφηβο να ονειρευτεί και τον ταξιδιώτη, να ψάξει για εισιτήρια για τις τελευταίες παρθένες, απάτητες περιοχές της γης. Είναι ακόμα ένα βιβλίο που θα θέσει το ερώτημα ήταν τελικά μαύρος ο πρώτος άνθρωπος που πάτησε τον Βόρειο πόλο? ‘Ήταν ο Κουκ αγύρτης ή ταξιδευτής, ήταν οι Ινουίτ θύματα των λευκών ή απλά κομπάρσοι με ουσιαστικό ρόλο στο ταξίδι του Πίρι? Άξιζε ο Ντέιβιντ της δόξας για τον Νότιο πόλο, είναι η υστεροφημία του Δούκα των Αβρουζίων άξια της προσπάθειας όταν καραβάνια αχθοφόρων και η Βρετανική διοίκηση στήριξαν το έργο του? Πάνω από όλα είναι ο «ηρωισμός» αυτών των γεωγραφικών κατακτήσεων, αποδεκτός σήμερα ή είναι μια εξιδανικευμένη εικόνα ενός αγώνα, δίχως αντίκρισμα για την δόξα των αρχηγών των αποστολών, όταν όλοι οι υπόλοιποι συμμετέχοντες, πέρασαν στην αφάνεια.

 

2.«Χίλια φεγγάρια» Σεμπάστιαν Μπάρι- (Ίκαρος)

Ανθρώπινη και θεϊκή δικαιοσύνη, έχουν μικτό ρόλο σε ένα βιβλίο συναισθημάτων, που αν και θα μπορούσε να γίνει ένα ταπεινό αστυνομικό γουέστερν, γίνεται ένα ψυχολογικό μυθιστόρημα, για την ωρίμανση μιας μικρής Ινδιάνας σε ένα ανεξάρτητο άνθρωπο σε μια κοινωνία , όπου γυναίκες και Ινδιάνοι είναι πολίτες δεύτερης κατηγορίας με ελάχιστα ή καθόλου δικαιώματα. Σκληρό, συγκινητικό και βαθιά ανθρώπινο και ρεαλιστικό, κάνει τον αναγνώστη να ταυτιστεί και να συμπάσχει με την κεντρική ηρωίδα, που προσπαθεί μάταια κάποιες φορές, όπως στην πραγματική ζωή να δώσει απαντήσεις στα ερωτήματα που την ταλανίζουν, αλλά ανταπεξέρχεται τις δυσκολίες, βγαίνοντας πιο ώριμη, πιο ζωντανή αλλά και με τις ουλές να την καίνε τα βράδια των σκέψεων.

 Αν θέλει κανείς να διαβάσει τα δύο βιβλία μαζί, θα εντυπωσιαστεί από το σκοτεινό γοτθικό  ‘Μέρες δίχως τέλος» και το οντολογικό , σκοτεινό αλλά και πολύ πιο μελαγχολικό «Χίλια φεγγάρια». Το ποιο βιβλίο είναι καλύτερο, το αφήνω σε εσάς να το κρίνετε. Το μόνο βέβαιο είναι ότι ο Μπαρι έχει πετύχει να δημιουργήσει μια ομάδα χαρακτήρων που ταυτιζόμαστε μαζί τους σε ένα κόσμο τόσο μακρινό αλλά συνάμα και τόσο επίκαιρο και κοντινό, γιατί η παθογένεια του ανθρώπου έχει παραμείνει απαράλλακτη από το μετεμφυλιακό Τενεσί στην σημερινή Ελλάδα, ίσως και να έχει χειροτερέψει, ενώ το ίδιο ισχύει και για τις Η.Π.Α. Ένα διαχρονικό μυθιστόρημα, για τον ρατσισμό, τον σεξισμό και τον έρωτα, σε ένα κόσμο που μετράει μόνο η προσωπική τιμιότητα, σε πείσμα των συμπαιγνιών και τη κατασκευασμένης «ευνομίας».

 

3.«Το κορίτσι με τους αναρχικούς»- Isabel Meredith (Χίμαιρα)

«Το κορίτσι με τους αναρχικούς» είναι ένα βιβλίο που έχει ιδιαίτερη αξία, γιατί αποτελεί την πραγματική εξιστόρηση ενός κινήματος από ανθρώπους που συμμετείχαν, με την οικονομική άνεση και την κοινωνική θέση τους, να τους επιτρέπει, τη συμμέτοχή, τον σχολιασμό αλλά πάνω από όλα το να είναι παρατηρητές όσων ενεπλάκησαν στο κίνημα βρίσκοντας εκεί δικαιολογία ή διαφυγή από την σκληρή πραγματικότητα του προλετάριου του 19 ου αιώνα. Είναι η γνωστή έκφραση «αριστερός με δεξιά τσέπη» σε όλο το μεγαλείο της. Η ιδεολογία είναι παρούσα, αλλά οι συγγραφείς δεν αντιμετωπίζουν ποτέ προβλήματα επιβίωσης, μόνο προσφέρουν στο πλαίσιο του δυνατού, χωρίς να διακινδυνεύουν παρά ελάχιστα. Ένα παιχνίδι επανάστασης, όταν οι πραγματικοί επαναστάτες Ρώσοι,Ιταλοί και Γάλλοι αναρχικοί, οδηγούνται στην κρεμάλα και γκιλοτίνα.

 Αξίζει να το διαβάσετε, δίνοντας εξίσου μεγάλη βαρύτητα στο βιβλίο όσο και στην πολύ ωραία εισαγωγή του Θωμά Μαστακούρη που αποκαθηλώνει τον μύθο και οδηγεί σε μια πιο τίμια ανάγνωση, βασισμένη στην πεζή μεν, αλλά αδυσώπητη και αδιάψευστη πραγματικότητα. Όπως έλεγε και ένας παλιός αναρχικός των Εξαρχείων, «δεν μπορείς να έχεις τα πόδια και στις δύο βάρκες».

 

4.«Σικελικό ειδύλλιο» -Σώτη Τριανταφύλλου  (Πατάκης)

Το ¨Σικελικό ειδύλλιο» δεν είναι σε καμία περίπτωση, μια ερωτική ιστορία, όπως υπαινίσσεται ο τίτλος του. Είναι μια ιστορία για τον έρωτα, την απογοήτευση, βαθιά αισιόδοξη, ακόμα και όταν ο θάνατος και η κοινωνική απόρριψη κυριαρχούν. Ένας μικρός ύμνος στην αγάπη για το διάβασμα, το όνειρο, την γνώση και την ανάγκη του καθενός να χαράζει το δικό του μονοπάτι, έστω και μικρό, παίρνοντας την ευθύνη των πράξεων του. Δίχως μεγαλοστομίες, αφήνει μια γλυκόπικρη γεύση, ένα χαμόγελο και μια σκέψη για το χθες, που στις ημέρες μας με τις δολοφονίες πάθους γυναικών, είναι ακόμη πιο επίκαιρο, για την πραγματική γυναικεία χειραφέτηση που είναι για την Κοντσέττα, έστω και με άγνοια όρων όπως χειραφέτηση και φεμινισμός, καθημερινή πρακτική σε ένα εχθρικό περιβάλλον. Μια παραβολή για την διαφθορά και τον έλεγχο στον απλό άνθρωπο, σε κοινωνικό επίπεδο με τη σύγκρουση του Ντι Ματέι με τη Μαφία και της Κοντσέττα με την οικογένεια και το περιβάλλον της. Πριν σηκωθείς πρέπει να πέσεις, πριν τρέξεις, πρέπει να μάθεις να περπατάς και να στοχεύεις εκεί που μπορείς, για να δεις το αύριο λίγο καλύτερο. Σώτη Τριανταφύλλου σε μια ένεση αισιοδοξίας, σε έναν σκοτεινό κόσμο, επίκαιρη και γεμάτη εν συναίσθηση, αναδεικνύοντας τις ομοιότητες ανάμεσα στη δεκαετία του 50 σε Ελλάδα και Ιταλία αλλά και πόσο λίγο έχουμε προχωρήσει σε βασικά θέματα. Αν έχετε κόρη κάντε της αυτό το βιβλίο δώρο.

 

5.«Μην πεις λέξη-Βία και προδοσία στη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία. Η κρυφή ιστορία του IRA» - Patrick Radden Keefe (Μεταίχμιο)

Ο Αμερικανός δημοσιογράφος Patrick Radden Keefe με αφορμή την εξαφάνιση μιας μητέρας δέκα παιδιών της Τζιν Μακόνβιλ ξετυλίγει ένα νήμα από γεγονότα και ανθρώπους , πραγματικούς όπως και η εξαφάνιση με τη μορφή ενός καλοδουλεμένου αστυνομικού μυθιστορήματος. Το ζήτημα είναι ότι όλο οι συμμετέχοντες ,είναι πραγματικοί, όπως και τα γεγονότα που αναφέρονται. Αυτό είναι που κάνει το βιβλίο ακόμη πιο δυνατό και τελικά την πραγματικότητα, πιο ισχυρή συγγραφέα, μιας ιστορίας, αδελφοκτόνων, επαναστατών γεμάτων φανατισμό αλλά και αντεπαναστατών και Στρατιωτικών που βλέπουν την Βόρειο Ιρλανδία σαν τόπο άσκησης πρακτικών που μελέτησαν και τελειοποίησαν σε αφρικανικές χώρες, απαξιώνοντας τον άνθρωπο, τα ανθρώπινα δικαιώματα και βγάζοντας από τον κάθε συμμετέχοντα τα χειρότερα του ένστικτα.

 Όπως κάθε εμφύλιος , ο Ιρλανδικός οδήγησε σε μια παύση εχθροπραξίων. Ο Keefe, αναμοχλεύει το παρελθόν, βασισμένος σε αρχεία και μαρτυρίες των συμμετεχόντων και στο τέλος αφήνει μόνο την πικρία των παραγκωνισμένων «αγωνιστών», τα δάκρυα της οικογένειας, ένα τοπίο, εμφύλιου σπαραγμού, «καρφιών», δολοφονιών, τρόμου, ζηλωτών, στην υπηρεσία ενός ανωτέρου σκοπού και μια έρευνα αστυνομικής φύσεως, γεμάτη στοιχεία, που ο αναγνώστης καλείται να αποφασίσει να υποδεικνύουν όπως υπαινίσσεται ο συγγραφέας, ότι ο δολοφόνος/εκτελεστής αποκαλύφθηκε. Μια ιστορία εμφύλιου σπαραγμού, αθώων που θυσιάζονται στο όνομα του «σκοπού» και μίσους που η μόνη διέξοδος του είναι η  αιματηρή σύγκρουση, μέχρι η πολιτική να αναλάβει να κάνει τον ιδεαλισμό, να φαίνεται ή να είναι απαρχαιωμένος μπροστά στην ανάγκη του ρεαλισμού. Θα ήταν μια αστυνομική ιστορία με πολιτικό υπόβαθρο, αν όλα τα πρόσωπα δεν ήταν αληθινά και οι καταθέσεις τους καταπέλτης για όσα έκαναν και για όσα μετάνιωσαν ,αλλά επίσης για όσα δεν τόλμησαν να αποκαλύψουν δεσμευόμενοι από τον φόβο της αντεκδίκησης και την ενοχή για τις πράξεις τους. Συγκλονιστική ανατομία μιας οργάνωσης που λατρεύτηκε στην Ελλάδα και ήταν εξίσου ανήθικη και δολοφονική όσο και οι Βρετανοί αντίπαλοι της, δικαιολογώντας τα μέσα με πρόφαση τον σκοπό, βάζοντας τον απλό πολίτη στις υποσημειώσεις της ιστορίας. Η πραγματικότητα είναι πολύ πιο σκληρή και ευφάνταστη από τον κάθε συγγραφέα.

 Συγχαρητήρια στον Keefe για τον τρόπο που συνέδεσε και διαχειρίστηκε ένα μεγάλο όγκο πληροφοριών, διασταυρώνοντας και μέχρι το τέλος ζητώντας από όσους είναι εν ζωή να τοποθετηθούν. Μια δημοσιογραφική δουλειά, που τιμά τον όρο «ανεξάρτητος» δημοσιογράφος και φωτίζει μια περίοδο της Ιρλανδικής ιστορίας άγνωστη σε εμάς αλλά όπως φάνηκε και στην ίδια τη χώρα της, γεμάτη εμφύλια πάθη και μίσος.

 

6."Νορμανδία  D Day"-  Τζάιλς Μίλτον (Εκδόσεις Μίνωας)

Το βιβλίο κάνει τη διάσωση του στρατιώτη Ράιαν να φαίνεται σαν ταινία κινουμένων σχεδίων τους Μπόλεκ και Λόλεκ. Αλλά μόνο όταν φτάσεις στη βιβλιογραφία θα καταλάβεις τη δουλειά του συγγραφέα. Ενός ανθρώπου που ο πεθερός του είχε πολεμήσει ως διαβιβαστής στην Βερμαχτ. Απόλυτα κυριος του έργου του, κρατά αποστάσεις. Μιλά για τους Γερμανούς αρματιστές με τα εγκλήματα πολέμου που είχαν στην πλάτη τους από το Ανατολικό μέτωπο που θα πολεμήσουν γιατί βλέπουν την Νέμεση να έρχεται .Για την ανικανότητα, τον φόβο και την αποτυχία της Αμερικανικής διοίκησης στην Ομάχα, που χρειάστηκε τον προσωπικό παράγοντα ,δύο αξιωματικών για να τολμήσουν να απεγκλωβιστούν. Την διαφορά εκπαίδευσης των ειδικών δυνάμεων που είχαν ελπίδες επιβίωσης, σε σχέση με αυτές των απλών στρατιωτών, που ουσιαστικά ήταν τροφή για τα πολυβόλα και πυροβόλα. Τις αστοχίες του ναυτικού και της αεροπορίας σε θέματα προετοιμασίας και καταστροφής στόχων. Πάνω από όλα όμως μιλάει για τον μεγάλο συμμετέχοντα στην μεγάλη απόβαση, τον άνθρωπο και αφιερώνει πολύ σωστά το βιβλίο σε όσους υπηρέτησαν.

Βιβλίο ποταμός, εικόνας, συναισθήματος, αποδομεί την ηρωική εικόνα του πολέμου, τον απογυμνώνει ως το μεδούλι και θέτει ερωτήματα, που μόνο όσοι υπηρέτησαν εκεί, έχουν το δικαίωμα να απαντήσουν. Απαραίτητο ανάγνωσμα για κάθε φίλο της ιστορίας και ειδικότερα  του ΒΠΠ.

 

 

7".Ορατή σαν αόρατη"- Ζυράνα Ζατέλη (Καστανιώτης)

Η επιστροφή της πιο "φευγάτης" μυθιστοριογράφου της Ελληνικής λογοτεχνίας στον 20ο και 21ο αιώνα με ένα βιβλίο που υπόσχεται ταξίδια σε ονειριά τοπία, που μόνο η γραφή και η γλώσσα της Ζατέλη μπορούν να δημιουργήσουν.

Από το οπισθόφυλλο του βιβλίου:

Δεν μπορείς να πεθάνεις αν δεν γράψεις αυτήν την ιστορία».

«Για να την γράψω πρέπει κάποιος να πεθάνει πρώτα».

Έρχονταν κι έφευγαν οι εποχές, οι μέρες καταπίνανε τις μέρες, κι η Λεύκα παράδερνε μες στην σιωπή και στους δισταγμούς της. Όλο ένοιωθε να την φυσάει το αεράκι της ευφορίας, να παρακινείται συθέμελα να γράψει επιτέλους την «ιστορία φάντασμα», όλο μαζεύονταν τα σύννεφα πάνω από το κεφάλι της, κι έλεγες τώρα θ’ ανοίξουν οι κρουνοί και να πώς ξεκινούν οι καταιγίδες. Πέφτανε τότε μερικές ωραίες στάλες, το ρίγος την συνέπαιρνε, κι ύστερα πάλι όλα χάνονταν, κρύβονταν κατά πού δεν ξέρουμε. Και πόσο ακόμα να περιμένει ν’ αποδημήσει ένας άνθρωπος για να λάβει το λάκτισμα, την ευλογία!... Πώς αντέχω και δεν απελπίζομαι; αναρωτιόταν, την ώρα που μέσα της βαθειά εφτά φορές είχε αλλάξει δέρμα απ’ την απελπισία. Κι εκεί ήταν το ζήτημα: οι φοβερότερες στιγμές και σκέψεις, οι πιο ανείπωτες, δύνανται άραγε να γραφούν σ’ ένα χαρτί ή μήτε στον αιώνα τον άπαντα; Δύναται να «κρυφτεί» η ίδια μέσα σ’ αυτά που έγραφε ή μόνο να κρυφτεί απ’ αυτά; Κι αν δεν υπήρχε διαφορά;

Μια μαγική αναζήτηση για τα άρρητα της γραφής, μέσα στα μυστικότερα μονοπάτια της μυθοπλασίας· γιατί τα καλύτερα είναι αυτά που δεν γράφονται και το πιο σημαντικό ποτέ δεν το λέμε.

 

8.«Κόκκινες ψυχές»- GREVEILLAC PAUL (Πόλις)

Μια ζοφερή ιστορία για την απώλεια της ελευθερίας και των ατομικών ελευθεριών στο σύστημα που διατυμπάνιζε την προστασία τους. 'Ενα μυθιστόρημα περισσότερο ανθρώπινο παρά πολιτικό, που σε αγγίζει με τις καταστάσεις που περιγράφει. Η καταστολή των ανθρώπινων δικαιωμάτων και ατομικών ελευθεριών, η λογοκρισία στην κάθε μορφή τέχνης , μερικές δεκαετίες πριν το σήμερα, ακόμη μιλάνε στον αναγνώστη που δίχως παρωπίδες αντιλαμβάνεται, την έλλειψη χρώματος του φασισμού. Η τέχνη απελευθερώνει και όπως και η εργασία στο αντίστοιχο καθεστώς, έχουν βαρύ τίμημα.

Μόσχα, ΕΣΣΔ. Ο πολιτισμός έχει τεθεί στην υπηρεσία του κράτους. Ο Βλαντίμιρ Κατούτσκοφ και ο Πάβελ Γκολτσένκο, στα είκοσί τους, γνωρίζονται τυχαία ένα βράδυ. Ο Βλαντίμιρ Κατούτσκοφ, αποκαρδιωμένος από το σύστημα, αποφασίζει να το υπονομεύσει, με όλο το ρίσκο που συνεπάγεται κάτι τέτοιο. Βάζοντας, μάλιστα, σε κίνδυνο και όσους τον περιβάλλουν. Οι "Κόκκινες ψυχές" είναι ένα μυθιστόρημα-φόρος τιμής στους πιο ανεξάρτητους Σοβιετικούς καλλιτέχνες, τους «διαφωνούντες» και τα αριστουργήματα που μας παρέδωσαν. Αλλά είναι και μια ωδή στη φιλία: τη φιλία που ενώνει, μέσα από τις δοκιμασίες και τον χρόνο, τον Ρώσο Βλαντίμιρ Κατούτσκοφ και τον Ουκρανό Πάβελ Γκολτσένκο. 9."Το δικό μου Ντιτρόιτ"-Νταν Γεωργακάς (Εκδόσεις  των συναδέλφων)

 Ο Νταν Γεωργακάς δεν είναι απλώς ένας Ελληνοαμερικανός. Το δικό μου Ντιτρόιτ δεν είναι ένα συνηθισμένο βιβλίο με τις αναμνήσεις ενός μετανάστη δεύτερης γενιάς. Είναι η θεώρηση της μεταπολεμικής Ελλάδας ,αλλά και των Αμερικανών μεταναστών δεύτερης και τρίτης γενιάς, μέσα από τα μάτια ενός ανθρώπου, που το μυαλό του αναζητά την αλήθεια και τη γνώση, δίχως να απορρίπτει τις ρίζες του αλλά και δίχως να τις αφήνει να τον "πνίξουν" Αφοσιωμένος στην οικογένεια αλλά και ταυτόχρονα ανεξάρτητος, ταξιδεύει στην Ευρώπη και την Ελλάδα για να αποκομίσει εμπειρίες και ταυτόχρονα να αμφισβητήσει τα πάντα.

 Το βιβλίο του είναι η οπτική του για την πόλη (και για τη χώρα) που γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε, αλλά και για τους ανθρώπους της: γηγενείς και μετανάστες, λευκούς και μαύρους, ανθρώπους της διπλανής πόρτας, ανθρώπους του μόχθου. Διαβάζοντας "Το δικό μου Ντιτρόιτ" ζούμε κι εμείς μέσα σε μια πόλη-σύμβολο των ΗΠΑ, η οποία από κέντρο της αυτοκινητοβιομηχανίας για πολλές δεκαετίες τον 20ό αιώνα, έγινε η χρεοκοπημένη πόλη-φάντασμα του 2013.

 Ο Γεωργακάς συνδυάζει τις αγάπες του, κινηματογράφο και διάβασμα, με τη αναζήτηση της προσωπικής και εθνικής σφραγίδας, ως μετανάστης αλλά και ως Αμερικανός στις Η.Π.Α των κοινωνικών αλλαγών, του κινήματος για το πολιτικά δικαιώματα, με τον ίδιο ενεργό μέλος μικρών ομάδων που με 'όπλο την τέχνη, προσπαθούν να επηρεάσουν και να αλλάξουν το κατεστημένο, στον περίγυρο των Αμερικανών αλλά και στον δικό τους κλειστό περίγυρο της Ελληνικής και Ιταλικής κοινότητας.

 Γεμάτο πληροφορίες για την Ελληνική κοινότητα του Ντιτρόιτ αλλά και την ίδια την πόλη και τις αλλαγές της, εντυπωσιάζει με την θέση της οικογένειας ,της εκκλησίας και των αλλαγών των Ελλήνων που προσαρμόστηκαν ή εξελίχθηκαν ανάλογα, σε πολυπολιτισμικές κοινότητες, όντας πολλές φορές και οι ίδιοι πρόσφυγες, όπως ο Μικρασιάτης παππούς του. Ο ρατσισμός, τα εργατιά δικαιώματα, η θέση της γυναίκας και ο ρόλος της πανταχού παρούσας Ελληνίδας μάνας, σε αντιδιαστολή με τους Έλληνες συγγενείς και τους γάμους με συνοικέσια στην μετεμφυλιακή Ελλάδα. Η πραγματική ζωή της Ελληνικής και αργότερα Ελληνοαμερικανικής παροικίας του Ντιτρόιτ, σε αντίθεση με τι; ταινίες τύπου "My big Greek Fat wedding" ξεφεύγει από την καρικατούρα και αναδεικνύει το Ελληνικό στοιχείο που δεν φοβήθηκε την ενσωμάτωση, ορίζοντας θέση του, ως Αμερικανός,. Ελληνικής καταγωγής με συμμετοχή στα κοινωνικά και πολιτιστικά δρώμενα των δεκαετιών 60-80, ενεργά και με γνώμονα πέρα από τα στενά, μειονοτικά κριτήρια. Συγκινητικό, ανθρώπινο και εντελώς εκτός του κυρίαρχου πνεύματος για τον γραφικό μετανάστη, είτε στο ΄'Η θεία από το Σικάγο' είτε σε αντίστοιχες δουλείες από τις .Η.Π.Α

Από τις σελίδες αυτής της εξαιρετικής μαρτυρίας περνούν οι αναμνήσεις των παιδικών χρόνων, η οπτική από τα ταξίδια στην Ελλάδα, η οικογένεια, οι Έλληνες μετανάστες, τα έθιμα και οι συνήθειες τους, ο αγώνας τους για κοινωνική καταξίωση. Περνούν όμως και οι άλλες εθνότητες και πολιτισμοί μιας πολύχρωμης πόλης, οι μαύροι και οι αγώνες τους (αλλά και η μουσική τους: ποιος δεν ξέρει τη θρυλική Motown!), τα πανεπιστημιακά αμφιθέατρα, οι πολιτικές και ιδεολογικές ζυμώσεις εντός τους και, τέλος, περνούν σαν σε θλιβερή παρέλαση τα "ερείπια του Ντιτρόιτ" .Το παρόν μέσα από τα μάτια της μνήμης, μιας οικογένειας που η Αμερική έδωσε ευκαιρίες, αλλά ποτέ δεν επαναπαύθηκε στον τρόπο ζωής της παλιάς πατρίδας, κρατώντας το χαρακτηριστικό της φυλής, τα ανοιχτά αυτιά και μάτια.

 

 

10.»Ο εφιάλτης» -Χανς Φαλάντα-(Γκούτενμπερκ)

O Χανς Φαλάντα, έχει μιλήσει για τον εφιάλτη της έλευσης του Ναζισμού στη ζωή του απλού ανθρώπου. Τα αδιέξοδα, τις φοβίες αλλά και τις παραχωρήσεις που έκανε ο Γερμναός για να επιβιώσει. Στον 'Εφιάλτη" μιλά για την επόμενη μέρα, την μέρα που η Γερμανία μοιράζεται σε ζώνες ελέγχου και ο απλός πόλίτης, ένοχος ή οχι για τα εγκλήματα του προηγούμενου καθεστώτος, προσπάθεί ακόμη μια φορά να επιβιώσει.

 ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙΑ 1945: Σε μια επαρχιακή πόλη υπό σοβιετική διοίκηση και στο κατεστραμμένο Βερολίνο, ένας συγγραφέας και η γυναίκα του, κυριευμένοι από φόβο και ενοχές, προσπαθούν απελπισμένα να επιβιώσουν. Το πιο αυτοβιογραφικό μυθιστόρημα του Χανς Φάλαντα και μια συγκινητική μαρτυρία για τη ζωή στη Γερμανία τους πρώτους μήνες μετά την πτώση του Τρίτου Ράιχ. 11."Utopia avenue"- David Mitchell (Μεταίχμιο)

Ένα μουσικό μυθιστόρημα, που θα φέρει στο μυαλό σας την Βρετανική σκηνή των 60ς και ιδιαίτερα τους Rolling Stones. Μια εποχή που μουσικά καθόρισαν τα μπλουζ, αλλά και εποχή που η ίδια προσδιόρισε συνήθειες σεξουαλικές, εθισμού, καταχρήσεων, απελευθέρωσης,καλλιτεχνικών εκλάμψεων προετοιμάζοντας τον κόσμο για την αλλαγή της δεκαετίας του 70. 12.«Τα αγόρια του Νίκελ» Colson Whitehead (Ικαρος)

Μοντέρνα Αμερικάνικη λογοτεχνία από έναν μαύρο συγγραφέα με άποψη. Ο CW χρησιμοποιεί την ιστορία ενός εφήβου που από μια «κακιά» στιγμή, από μια άτυχη επιλογή, οδηγείται αντί για τα θερινά μαθήματα λογοτεχνίας του τοπικού κολεγίου σε μια πολιτεία του Νότου, στο αναμορφωτήριο/Σχολείο Νίκελ. Η ιστορία ξεκινά και τελειώνει με μία αναδρομή, στο χθες με τα μάτια του σήμερα. Με απλή γραμμική αφηγηματική γραφή, ο Whithead  μας εισάγει στην ζωή του μικρού Έλγουντ, τα όνειρα και την ωρίμανση του, καθώς με την είσοδο του στην εφηβεία ο αγώνας  ενάντια στον φυλετικό διαχωρισμό γίνεται βίωμα στη γενιά του. Συμπαραστάτης του και σιωπηλή φωνή του παρελθόντος του φόβου και της φυλετικής διάκρισης η γιαγιά του. Προστάτης άγγελος και ταυτόχρονα δεσμοφύλακας, ενός αγοριού, που βλέπει την επερχόμενη είσοδο του στο κολέγιο, σαν άνεμο ελευθερίας. Ένα αγόρι, πρόθυμο, συντεταγμένο, με αγάπη στα κόμικς, τη ζωή αλλά και στην αρχή της συνειδητοποίησης με άρμα ένα άλμπουμ με ηχογραφημένες ομιλίες του Μ.Λουθερ Κινγκ, που πυρπολούν την καρδιά του και ατσαλώνουν την θέληση του για ένα καλύτερο κόσμο. Ένα τυχαίο γεγονός, θα τον οδηγήσει στο αναμορφωτήριο Νικελ. Εκεί που ο νόμος είναι λευκοί και μαύροι επιτηρητές ,επόπτες και ενώ επιφανειακά θυμίζει μια ήπια εκδοχή αναμορφωτηρίου, περισσότερο ένα σχολειό με συνοδεία εργασιών στις εγκαταστάσεις του σχολείου, κτήματα, τυπογραφείο κτλπ, στην  πραγματικότητα, είναι μια συμπυκνωμένη μικρογραφία της διαφθοράς των σωφρονιστικών μηχανισμών των Η.Π.Α

Η παθογένεια των ΗΠΑ και το υπόβαθρο των φυλετικών διακρίσεων, μαζί με τον στρουθοκαμηλισμό στο πραγματικό πρόβλημα, τις κοινωνικές και φυλετικές ανισότητες και την ασυδοσία του κράτους, γίνονται θέματα σχολιασμού από τον Colson Whithead μέσα από το Νίκελ. Ἐνα μυθιστόρημα για την δεκαετία του 60, επίκαιρο όσο ποτέ στην δεκαετία του 2020 , που τέμνει βαθιά την Αμερικάνικη κοινωνία και το σύστημα εφαρμογής απονομής της δικαιοσύνης και τις παθογένειες του, δίνοντας την απάντηση  γιατί τίποτα δεν άλλαξε. Γιατί δεν αρκεί ένας Ἐλγουντ να γκρεμίσει ένα σαθρό οικοδόμημα, που βασίζεται στην βία ,την ασυδοσία και τη διαφθορά, με συμμέτοχους όλων των χρωμάτων ,που τους ενώνει η στολή και η εξουσία.

Και επειδή η ανάγνωση χρειάζεται την αντίστοιχη υπόκρουση, οι μουσικές μας προτάσεις για το 2021, με αξιολογική σειρά για να τις απολαύσετε, αναμένοντας το 2022

Retro rock with some more heavy twist. "Still got the time" is a song where Y&T meets LED ZEPPELIN to cover MOUNTAIN and the result is a grinder. A monolithic heavy riff over which the groove take all over the place, with no mercy for th) sensitive ears of rappers, trappers and pop lovers or those who like the corpse paint and the spandex rule their "metal". Actually the ghost of Plant,Page,Bonham and Jones are all over the place. "You dont need me' is another example of retro rock with some ethnic twist and a great overtone by Rpry Gallgher at the guitar solo ing."All that i need" is a fine example of their muscular, groovy 70s influenced hard rock with CREAM, LED ZEPPELIN, MOUNTAIN and early SCORPIONS joint to worship the six string and the Gods of Rock n roll.

 

 

The band as you understand is a power trio , originated from Lindesberg ,Sweden but they could have come from UK of the 70s with no doubt 'bout their origins. Straightforward, groovy, guitar driven hard rock with excellent male (at last) vocals from a singer who likes to sing and not scream, over the groovy  melodies of the band. An add to their sound is the powerful drumming of Dahlgen and the tight sound along with guitarist's Jansson  influences who include enough psychedelia, to make an old hippie cry and then listen to "When lights go out" a song fro which Gary Moore would kill to write,and definitely to play at. An album that praises the 70s and knows how not to become vintage, retro etc. A strong release that has to be listened to.

Brian Setzer -"Gotta have the rumble"

I could end the reviewer in one world, rockabilly. But I use a few more. Jerry lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Fats domino, Buddy holy are all here in an album where rockabilly meets streetwise music with some unexpected but equally loved twists. The eastern climates of "Smash upon highway one" bring a different feeling, to the album while "Rockabilly riot "is what the name says, a song from a juvenile delinquents institution. Setzer uses every trick in the book of rockabilly 'Cat with nine wives", "Turn you on, turn me on", "Off you rocker" but also adds the timeless of the twelve bar music and makes the album an effortless treat for today’s listener. 

 

 

Instead of making a romantic tour to the music of the 50s, he writes songs based on the rockabilly tradition but with a more contemporary sound, plus some country elements "Rockabilly banjo" ready to set the dance hall on fire and have the rockers get into a fight with everyone else. Masculine, rocking, and most of all compelling the album just gives the shivers o those who like their music popish, without nerve, quiet. Revolutionary , definitely not, out of the box and inventive , for sure.

The Courettes-"Back in mono"

A duet who unlike the WHITE STRIPES prefer the more polished form of rock n roll, instead the primitive form of blues. Influenced more by The Ronettes, Shangri Las etc along buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and the early twelve bar pioneers, they release an album (their third) full of sugar coated rock n roll /pop and rockabilly "Melodic and melancholic at songs like "My one and only baby", streetwise and rebels at "Edge of my nerves" the embrace the 50s with love and affection. 

 

 

If "Grease" would need a new soundtrack or even better "Happy days" becoming a movie,Fonzy would love to swing at their songs. Denmark (Martin) and Brazil Flavia unite their creative forces and bring the glory days of garage,rockabilly back on our turntables. The difference between them and bands like The Raveonettes, is they have a far more diversified, enriched sound and they love each and every aspect of early days rock n roll, even production wise, miming the famous Phil Spector ,"Wall of sound".

Smith/Kotzen- "Better days"

 

 

An ep in less than a year from the first full work, product of collaboration between Adrian Smith (IRON MAIDEN) and Richie Kotzen (WINERY DOGS). Does the ep has any value? Any reason to exist? For many reasons it has. The first contains four previously unreleased tracks, the heavier of them "Rise" with the participation of Mike Portnoy and a positive lyrical message regarding the Covid 19 situation worldwide (Thank God and science for the vaccine). The opener "Better days" has the Shrapnel/Mike Varney guitar dwelling we used to love in the Cacophony days,with the soulful vocals of Kotzen soften the final result and Smith giving his own tone at the backing vocals. A metal /soul track that grabs you by the throat and demand your ultimate attention.

 

 

“Got A Hold On Me”has the 70s smoking feeling all around from the opening guitar riff that could be in any MOUNTAIN, AEROSMITH, BLACK BETTY album or even pre 1984 WHITESNAKE. The neo classical bridge solo, just shows the versatility of both guitarists as players and composers.. Magnificent collaboration with great guitar pyrotechnics.“Hate And Love”is a more metallic, still groovy exercise with the great soul overtones by Kotzen's voice. An ep worth its value and existence , as it stretches the collaboration of these two great artists, conquering new heights.

Bernie Marsden- Chess

 

Mr Marsden continues his tribute to his musical influences covering songs from the Chess archives/αρτιστσ. Chess is the second album in Marsden’s “Inspiration Series,” . Chess sees Marsden offer two original compositions and 10 classics that were originally released on Chess Records by artists such as Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf, Sonny Boy Williamson, Muddy Waters, and Elmore James.Raw, rocking, bluesy rock n roll with honky tonk overtones and his band tighter than Jenifer Lopez jeans and the result is an album to blow your speakers .From the opener "Just your fool" where harmonica steals the show to the laid back , Chess spirit is here with Marrsden on fire both in his playing as in his singing."Back in the USA" is a storming rock n roll tune ready to set the joint on fire and will make the original artist Chuck Berry smile up in the rock n roll heaven. More to the beat at Little Milton's “Grits Ain’t Groceries,”he lets the rhythm overflow and get the mojo working with the Hammond taking over.On Muddy Waters "I'm ready" he shows to each and everyone of us, that his ready for everything and he has the guts to prove it, in the laid back,steady blues track,where harmonica, once again gives the rhythm, before he takes the ead and bring the perfection through a few, but crucial and vital notes, on the pentatonic scale.

 

 

Another lively cover cones in "You can't judge a book" by Bo Diddley,where Marsden keep the rhythm alive and well. On 'I can't hold on' by Elmore James he just let the twelve bars get all over the place.Albert King’s “Won’t Be Hanging Around.” lets Bernie slow the engines and let the emotion step upfront and he does it in a true bluesy tradition with some excellent finger picking. "Fattening frogs for snakes" by Sonny Boy Williamson set the fret board on fire, in every possible way. Jimmy Rodgers 'That's alright" keeps the laid back, steady blues thrill, Marsden so colorful revives with this interpretations of these blues standards."Who s been talking" by Howling Wolf has the thrilling passion of BB King and Santana, the Latin feeling that makes the blues so attractive, in the Marsden version. The album’s two originals are “Lester,” a short, twelve bar , ballroom boogie and “Johnny,” a  groovier instrumental where Marsden's guitar steals the show with the phrases he spits to the astonished listener, a blues catalyst to release the good vibes of the blues.

One of the most interesting side products of the Covid 19 quarantine was collaborations that fleurish out of nowhere. Stack in Berlin and meeting in studio,  members from US progers ELDER (Nicholas DiSalvo,  Michael Risberg and Georg Edert).and Berlins own children KADAVAR decided to collaborate and the result is a project equally extraordinary with what happened to the Western World these past two years. Imagine Ozzy period BLACK SABBATH meeting Danny Elfrman and HAWKWIND in a jam/trip over PORTISHEAD turns to understand the sonic equivalent of the project. Long duration songs that start mesmerizing build over a guitar riff and atmospheric sounds where vocals come in addition to the whole song and not as lead as we are used to. 

 

 

A tripy, doomy, gloomy, spacey depending on the song result ,claustrophobic, full of abandonment or gray shades as it was most of our life when the idea of a vaccine and a therapy was months away. ELDOVAR created a post rock/metal album where melody meets melancholy and metal meets atmospheric post rock , all in favor of art and self expression. Turn off the lights, light some candles and let the music warp you, thinking about the dark days ,till the morning sun releases you from the agony. A deeply esoteric album that demands listeners attention and pays back with vast emotions. An album to listen and think , an introspective album for modern rock lovers, without barriers where atmospheric post rock and stoner cross the barriers and create a new form of music self expression.

Deep Purple - "Turning to crime"

 

Finally the time has come, or Covid 19 made it happen for DEEP PURPLE  to release a covers album. The band from their early days never was afraid of covering songs from other artists . "Hush" their first hit was a cover version by Joe South, but Covid 19 and touring abstinence gave them the time to go through the catalogue of influences and pick some not so obvious choice to interpret them. Well musically nobody could have the slightest doubt that 2021 DEEP PURPLE wouldn't make it. Steve Morse and Don Airey are in great shape and help the utmost as most of the songs are from the 50s, 60s. For the same reason Ian Gillan doesn't have to stretch his voice. On the contrary he looks like he enjoys the band choices to cover, as rock n roll is all around, one of his favorite genres (Gillan and the Javelins). As for the rhythms section they are steadier than Gibraltar rock and have a groove that suits more to men with one third of their age, working like a Swiss clock with African heartbeat. 

 

 

 

Now regarding the songs they pick to cover ,  Huey "Piano" Smith's "Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu, Little Feat "Dixie Chicken," Louis Jordan's  "Let the Good Times Roll,"  Bob Dylan  "Watching the River Flow" ,Jimmy Driftwood's "The Battle of New Orleans" are among the not so expected ones to cover, although Ian Gillan loves 50s music, Dylan would be a hard guess. Love's "7 and 7 Is" , `` Yardbird's "Shapes of Things,"Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels' "Jenny Take a Ride!", and CREAM's "White Room" are more obvious choices. It is the closing "Caught in the Act," where parts of of five '60s favorites - JJeff Beck Group"Going Down," Booker T. & the MG's' "Green Onions," Allman Brothers "Hot 'Lanta," Led Zeppelins "Dazed and Confused" and  Spencer Davis Group's "Gimme Some Lovin'" -in a big, smokey, organ driven, guitar loaded mostly instrumental present the powerhouse that DEEP PURPLE of today are and makes a tour de force among the survivors of their generation. 

 A covers album maybe, a one to be proud of.

Cody Jinks-"Mercy"

 

 

Country rock or Rocking country, or even better countryified Americana, terms that have nothing to do with Cody Jinks and his new work. An artist who is loyal to his country roots and his rocking spirit and uses both genres as a good gunslinger both his hands to make the best out of his guns. An artist independent in music and personal approach, who writes music and communicates it to his fans, avoiding publicists and  major record companies, is the exemption of all the rules in our days. Emotional, full of power, swagger and also melancholy and love he lets the music do the talking. When someone releases a song like 'Hurt you" in these years of political correct fascism and the AntiFa movement castrating civil rights, you know America and the world still have a chance to breathe and speak freely. An in your face song about all those who betrayed us and want to live and walk the same earth with no consequences. My favorite song of the year . 

 

 

 

On other news, Cody Jinks finds another chance to talk about the common denominator to most rock and country albums, whiskey at "When whiskey call the shots",  heartbroken, abandonment at "Feeding The Flames.” with a twist from CREAM,  country radio soft spot “I Don’t Trust My Memories Anymore” and frustration at “Nobody Knows How to Read,”“Shoulders,” and  “Dying Isn’t Cheap" . From heartbreaking country songs to more middle of the road rockers, Cody use his best tool, his voice through simple chords and orchestrations to take us to a journey deep the badlands of loneliness and isolation ,through the mountains of human harness to the rainbow at the end of the wasted days, colored by whiskey and true friendship and love. An album for those who like their music country enough with a rocking edge, music from the heart and well structured to keep the listener singing all along in his pick up truck.

Canada's new big hope in retro/traditional ,70s influenced hard rock comes on our turntables with "This is who we are now". The Damn Truth are Lee-la Baum (lead vocals/guitar), Tom Shemer (Lead guitars), PY Letellier (Bass0, Dave Traina (Drums). Their new album,their third, is  full of anthemic ,guitar driven hard rock in the vein of BAD COMPANY, PAT TRAVERS, LED ZEPPELIN, early HEART with the magnificent vocals of Lee- La Baum taking the lead and the harmonies where all the other members participate upgrading the final result. A touch of Anastasia meets Grace Slick gives a deep, soulful voice who commands in favor of the music and the songs ,letting the vocal extremities skip the landscape. "Tomorrow" could be easily on any Van Halen -Hagar period album as also at any Thunder album and been among the standing out ones.Powerful she helps the whole imagery come to reality. 

 

 

 

A bit psychedelic "Lonely", a bit rocking "The fire", a bit out of this world, melancholic and sensitive "Everything fades', the Zep-esque "Shot em" with its epic overtones, a song that could be at IV easily, they create muscular songs for those who like their rock unpretentious and sweaty,yet sensitive enough and most and above all trippy. Hippies in their heart, they finished the album during the pandemic and although six songs were produced by Bob Rock , the rest had to be finalized with another producer. Still the album is full of youthful enthusiasm and optimism like "Only love'. They love music, they love the world and all this comes out in every note, in every world. Embrace their music and love will conquer you.
