What if Glen Hughes was a Southerner from Appalachian Mountains, then he ll probably would be someone like Caleb Johnson. A deep, soulful voice, some SKYNYRD notions, classic rock (LED ZEPPELIN) and a small portion of country bring us a remarkable album (his second one), where the soulful music just serves this deep,emotional voice. 'Drift away' in its acoustic version closes the album with a tour de force by an artist that has the pipes and know to stay simple and on target at his musical journey. The cover 'I just want to celebrate" lifts the spirits up. But the original songs are the ones that makes the difference."Glory bound", Drift away' are prime time 70s Hard rockers, like DEEP PURPLE spend more time at Kentucky. 

 

 

 

The opener "Dead man walking blues" is the more roots driven , dark, blues song.'Child of the wild' is another piece of resistance, in an album that could be among the best Glenn Hughes and Richie Kotzen have ever made. The voice is here and the music serves the voice. Hard rocking tunes with a Southern feeling, no guitar show off, no revitalizing production techniques just wah wah and soloing for the sake of the songs. Straight to the heart music from an artist with a voice strong and steady as the Rocky Mountains. The album has contributions from Jason Bonham, Tyler Bryant, Josh Sawyer, Audley Freed, Tony Lucido, Mike Webb, Damon Johnson, Gale Mayes, Devonne Michele, and Angela Primm and they really give the extra mile to this gifted singer.

Blues meets classic rock in the kind of laid back albums you enjoy on a hot summer night. 

"Listen to your song' is the perfect DIRE STRAITS meets Chris Rea song with some beautiful blues passages. 'Boot money' and Del Rio" are traditional blues rock songs with a twist of tex mex melody and some inner blues driven force. 'Over you" has the Nashville sound all over it, a broken hearted ballad with Johnny Cash ghost singing along with Nick Cave the backing vocals.'Scary stories" is Delta blues at its finest, with the slide and the pedal steel driving you through the Louisiana swamps.'Bubba jones" stay on the same path, a southern blues rock song full of groove and laziness.

 

"Someone is crying' is on the most FM blues style but still works fine with the subtle voice of TJW."Smoke from the chimney' is an album that loves the blues, classic rock and most of all is an album with songs coming from the heart.'Billy' is so much Elvis and the whole album in general has a very retro feeling been bluesy yet having some more country/FM elements. 

 

 

 

At the end of the listening, repeat is the button you're looking to push again and again Laid back, from the heart and with the sweet calmness that comes after a storm or heavy rain, this is the perfect album to leak your wounds and dream of the next day.

Pat Smillie-"Last chance'

Barroom boogie, soul, rhythm n blues, rock n roll a beautiful voice similar to Jimmy Barnes and a tight band. Do you need more? This is an album to get drunk to, to ride with ,make love and dance. Blues brothers in action is the most humble description. Party like we used to back in the 60s and 70s with Pat Smilee and his band and the satisfaction is guaranteed.

 

 

 

If you re in to Stax,Motown and Blues brothers,this is your last chance to get up and dance. «Ready,steady,Go!Η υπέροχη άνοδος και η ιλιγγιώδης πτώση του Swinging London» – Shawn Levy (Κουκκίδα)

Η επανάσταση των 60s, στην Ευρώπη, είχε επίκεντρο το Λονδίνο. Πολύ περισσότερο από μια μουσική επανάσταση με αιχμή αρχικά τους BEATLES και στη συνέχεια και τους ROLLING STONES, ήταν μια πολιτιστική επανάσταση. Ο Levy συλλέγει και παρουσιάζει έναν τεράστιο όγκο στοιχείων, με άξονα αναφοράς εμβληματικές μορφές στον χώρο του κινηματογράφου, όπως ο Τέρενς Στάμπ, της φωτογραφίας Μπέιλι, της κομμωτικής Βιντάλ Σασούν, της μουσικής βιομηχανίας Μπράιαν Επστάιν,  της ραπτικής Μαίρη Κουάντ, για να αναφέρω κάποια ενδεικτικά παραδείγματα.

 

Το Λονδίνο, από μια γκρίζα πόλη, πρωτεύουσα μιας θνήσκουσας αυτοκρατορίας που βγαίνει από τα δελτία του πολέμου, μεταμορφώνεται σε μόλις ένα εξάμηνο στον ομφαλό της μοντέρνας τέχνης, της μόδας, της μουσικής. Η δεκαετία του 60, παίρνει τη σκυτάλη από τη Ρώμη και με τη συνδρομή έκπτωτων αριστοκρατών, Εβραίων μάνατζερ, μουσικών από τον Βορρά, ηθοποιών και φωτογράφων με κόκνει καταγωγή και προφορά και αλλάζει τον κόσμο. Δεν καταργήθηκαν οι συμβάσεις και δεν αμφισβητήθηκε τόσο το πολιτικό κατεστημένο, όσο οι ηθικές αξίες και η μόδα, που έγινε πλέον το κίνητρο για να καταργηθούν ταξικές διαφορές και να αποκτήσει πρόσβαση στο «μοντέρνο», το hip, ο καθημερινός άνθρωπος. Η αριστοκρατία της Μ.Βρετανίας μέσα από σειρά εμβληματικών χαρακτήρων ενσωματώνεται στα hipμαγαζιά του Λονδίνου, που δίνουν τον τόνο της νέας εποχής, της αναίμακτης επανάστασης και συναναστρέφεται, την νέα τάξη των δημιουργών- διασημοτήτων. Φωτογράφοι, σχεδιαστές ρούχων, ηθοποιοί, δίχως ταξικές περγαμηνές, αλλά με δημιουργική διάθεση και όραμα εκτός των πολιτιστικών στεγανών της μεταπολεμικής κοινωνίας της Βρετανίας, ισοπεδώνουν τους ταξικούς φραγμούς και με τη βοήθεια της μουσικής, της τηλεόρασης και της διαφήμισης, των νέων μέσων, αλλάζουν τον τρόπο που εκφράζεται, ντύνεται και σκέπτεται η νέα γενιά.

Ο Levy με μαεστρία μεταφέρεται από τον ένα τομέα στον άλλο, από το ένα άκρο στο άλλο. Από τους Beatles και την πρώιμη φάση του ποπ φαινόμενου, στο ψυχεδελικό Sgt Peppers και την αντίθεση τους , τους πιο σκληρούς και βρώμικους RollingStone(s), η Βρετανία αποκτά φωνή και διαμορφώνει την αισθητική της δεκαετίας. Στοιχεία για κάθε είδος, κινηματογράφο, φωτογραφία, μόντελινγκ, κομμωτική, σχεδιασμό ρούχων, μουσική, μουσική βιομηχανία, εστίαση παρουσιάζονται μέσα από την ζωή των επιλεγμένων αντιπροσώπων του είδους και μπλέκονται σε ένα πολύχρωμο κουβάρι, που αποκτά στα τέλη της δεκαετίας, με την βοήθεια των Η.Π.Α ψυχεδελικό χρώμα.

Η «διαφήμιση» του SwingingLondon στους Αμερικάνικους Times, θα σημάνει την αρχή του τέλους. Αυτό που ήταν ένα κίνημα αισθητικής, θα γίνει αξιοθέατο σε τουριστικούς οδηγούς, όπως το πανκ και το metal στις επόμενες δεκαετίες. Η πορεία των κεντρικών υποκινητών αυτής της αλλαγής, θα ολοκληρωθεί, με κάποιους να πεθαίνουν (πληρώνοντας το τίμημα της ελευθερίας και των καταχρήσεων), άλλους να συνεχίζουν εξελίσσοντας την τέχνη και τον εαυτό τους αλλά και την ίδια την κοινωνία να έχει αλλάξει. Οι Η.Π.Α έχουν ετοιμάσει την διάδοχη κατάσταση με το κίνημα του χιπισμού στην Καλιφόρνια. Το Λονδίνο, παύει να είναι η καρδιά των γεγονότων. Η επίδραση και η επιρροή τού, παραμένει, όπως και των κινημάτων που γεννήθηκαν εκεί, ενεργή μέχρι σήμερα. Ενσωματωμένη στην καθημερινή κουλτούρα, στην μουσική, το ντύσιμο, το χτένισμα. Όπως σωστά λέει ο Levy ο σπόρος όλων αυτών που είμαστε(όσοι δεν ονειρεύονται ταγάρια και ινδικές φούστες, με θέα το Μαξίμου και τα ζιβάγκο ως εξέλιξη) είναι το Swinging London.

Όμως το άλλο σημείο του βιβλίου, που αποκαθηλώνει απόψεις που ταλανίζουν τον κόσμο δίχως γνώση, είναι για την στάση των RollingStonesαπέναντι στο κατεστημένο, με την περιγραφή της δικής για τα όργια και τα ναρκωτικά, μετά τη σύλληψη τους στο σπίτι του Ρίτσαρντς στο Ρέντλαντς

Οι Stones δεν κρατάνε καμία αντιεξουσιαστική στάση, θεωρούν τους εαυτούς τους θύματα, μιας υπερβολικής δίωξης και συμπεριφέρονται με κοσμιότητα και φόβο απέναντι στην επικείμενη φυλάκιση. Η αμφισβήτηση και η σύγκρουση με το κατεστημένο θα έρθουν στην επόμενη δεκαετία. Στο Swingnig London πριν τα ψυχοτρόπα ναρκωτικά, ήρθε η αλλαγή στην εικόνα της δημοσιότητας, των δημόσιων προσώπων, ειδώλων, της τέχνης και της μόδας. Η αλλαγή στην νοοτροπία του καθημερινού νέου, που θα προετοίμαζε τα κινήματα της αμφισβήτησης και την σύγκρουση με το κατεστημένο της δεκαετίας του 70.Το Swinging London είναι ουσιαστικά η μητέρα της ποπ κουλτούρας όπως την βιώνουμε ως σήμερα και ακόμα περισσότερα. Είναι η μετάβαση από το ασπρόμαυρο φιλμ στο έγχρωμο, για την Ευρωπαϊκή νεολαία, είναι πολύ περισσότερο από το άθροισμα των επι μέρους μονάδων, είναι κάτι που ο Levy περιγράφει ζωντανά, εμπεριστατωμένα και κάνοντας μας κοινωνούς μιας εποχής, που ο απόηχος δεν θα κοπάσει εύκολα,  60 χρόνια μετά. Την καλή ροή ανάγνωσης βοηθά η πολύ καλή μετάφραση του Αλέξη Καλοφωλιά.

Southern rock kings, SKYNYRD are simply GODS, are back with their new album and surprisingly they reinvent themselves. The opener "Live it down' is a straight forward rocker with the honky tonl overtones we love at BS. I guess ALLMAN, SKYNYRD ,BLACK CROWES can retire without concerns on their legacy. The jam part of "Live it down' is coming straight from the "Live at Fillmore East" while the harmonies are BS and in comparison BLACK CROWES. But BS have already evolved the honky tonk parts , the Tom Petty influences, classic rock, jam rock have made them a Southern beast that lives beyond and above tradition. "You hear Georgia" is their own tribute to SKYNYRD but at the same time is another BS classic.

 

The album is filled  with songs that stretches the band's sound and as always are emotional and far from the twelve bar ballroom boogie. "Lonesome for a livin" with the participation of another great artist Jamey Johnson is an emotional steamroller. At "all rise again" Warren Haynesjoint forces with Atlanta's best Southern band and gives a kick in the ass to stand up and live our lives in the virus depressed days."Hey Delilah" is a great Southern BS song, in the vein of GEORGIA SATELLITES , a party love song with great bass lines and some honky tonk piano to get you to the dance floor. The album is a musical dynamite with songs like "Old enough to know", "Morning side" and comes to the closure with the great Neil Young inspired , old timer in "Scarecrow". 

 

 

 

BS have been looking all over for inspiration, rock, country, honky tonk, but today they come wht their own distinctive sound, the one and only voice of Charlie Starr and the guitar work that is such a vital part of their sound with the Allman Bros footprint all over it. This is Southern rock for the 21st century and although i may not ever been able to see them on stage, i raise my glass from the South of Europe to the SKYNYRD of my generation and have a drink on them...
