STARMEN- "By the grace of rock n roll"

 

 

Don't get fooled by the KISS a like cover. STARMEN are Swedes, seasoned musicians with a far more variety/diversity in their musical taste. Hard rock, AOR, melodic rock,FM rock you name it they deliver it. The opening could have a touch of "Hide your heart" inside it but could also be at any album by TREAT, STAGE DOLLS, EUROPE, HOUSE OF LORDS, DOKKEN, RAINBOW,DEF LEPPARD and of course the FM period of KISS, just check "By the grace of rock n roll", "Bad habit". This is an album that follows the path of the high caliber melodic rock of the late 80s and has the songcracft of their members elevating it at a real high level. Songs like "Black thunder,white lightning" got the 70s feeling while "Kari", "Kisses of an enemy","Bad habit" are examples of the way someone must write a catchy AOR /hard rock song to get some airplay. 

 

 

 

Mass harmonies, guitars that delivers all the right tone and additional melodic phrases that makes Scandinavian sound so distinctive, all hail to Jon Norum and most and above all a tight band. Its been some time i haven't heard so good melodic rock in the 80s/90s fashion as bands like NFO and KING BEARD have a more West Coast approach. A great album to enjoy with, i m insisting on that , great compositions.

OZZYCASH- "OzzyCash"

Sometimes a name can make the difference and this time, it was spot on. This country rock band from Mandeville, Lousianna (i had to look a map to find the place) won't make the difference regarding the evolution of country rock/southern rock but they'll make the difference to those who appreciate a great tune. Songs like "Sucker', "Gettysburg", "San Antonio again" are full of great guitars in the vein of the true Southern Rock tradition, country sensibilities and lyrics that can touch your heart . 

 

 

 

Don't expect the innovation of music. The guys are with one foot to tradition and the other at good songwriting. Country "Good things", more rock "Round here", whatever they decide to play, they are damn good, honest and we really need to see them on stage and enjoy their musicas it is made for life situations or driving a car, a cold winter night, heading somewhere warmer. Great name, great music.

Έθιμα ταφής- Χάνα Κέντ  (Ίκαρος)

 Το έγκλημα, η τιμωρία, η συγχώρεση, ο κοινωνικός ρατσισμός, η γυναικεία χειραφέτηση, ο άνδρας αφέντης, το γκρίζο σκοτεινό τοπίο της Ισλανδίας του 19ου αιώνα, σε ένα μυθιστόρημα που βασίζεται σε πραγματικά γεγονότα και λειτουργεί στα αισθήματα του αναγνώστη σαν επέμβαση δίχως αναισθητικό.

Κάποιες φορές η ζωή ξεπερνά την φαντασία, χρειάζεται όμως μια πένα με ευφράδεια και ευαισθησία για να διηγηθεί τα γεγονότα. Στην Ισλανδία του 19^ου αιώνα, στις αρχές του, το 1829, για την ακρίβεια, μια κοινωνία αγροτών, ψαράδων και εμπόρων, συνταράσσεται από ένα διπλό φόνο. Δύο άνδρες, ο ένας ευυπόληπτος γαιοκτήμονας και «φαρμακοποιός» και ένας αγρότης του, δολοφονούνται μέσα στον ύπνο τους, με το σπίτι τους να παραδίνεται στη συνέχεια στις φλόγες.

Υπεύθυνοι για το τραγικό συμβάν, οι δύο παραδουλεύτρες και οικονόμος του σπιτιού, η νεαρή Σίγκα, και η ωριμότερης Άγκνες Μαγκνομσντότιρ μαζί με τον νεαρό άνδρα συνεργό Φρίντρικ.

Η ποινή θάνατος, δια αποκεφαλισμού, που οριστικοποιείται από τη μακρινή Κοπεγχάγη, με τη βοήθεια μιας αργής γραφειοκρατικής αλληλογραφίας, μέσω των Νομαρχιακών Επιτρόπων που αποτελούν την κρατική εξουσία στην αυτή την άκρη του κόσμου

Στο χειμωνιάτικο σκοτεινό, γκρίζο τοπίο, της χώρας των πάγων και των θερμοπιδάκων, η πένα της Κέντ, μας μεταφέρει σε ένα ταξίδι στα άδυτα των ψυχών αλλά και της ίδιας της κοινωνίας. Τα έθιμα της εποχής, επέτρεπαν λόγω των ειδικών καιρικών συνθηκών, να παραμένουν οι κρατούμενοι σε κατ οίκον φύλαξη στα αγροτόσπιτα των νομαρχιακών υπαλλήλων, έως ότου επιτρέψουν οι καιρικές συνθήκες την επιβολή της όποιας ποινής.

Ο χειμώνας θα λειτουργήσει σαν καθαρτήριο για την καταδικασμένη σε θάνατο γυναίκα. Μαζί της σύντροφοι, πνευματικοί αρωγοί της αλλά και συνοδοιπόροι της σε μια αναδρομή στο παρελθόν, ένας νεαρός πάστορας, ιεροδιάκονος, η οικογένεια του Γιον Γιόνσον που την φιλοξενεί και η μικρή κοινωνία του χωριού.

Ο φόβος μπροστά στο άγνωστο, στη στυγνή δολοφόνο, η απέχθεια και η δυσαρέσκεια, θα δώσουν την θέση τους, στην γνωριμία, την αποδοχή και την ενσυναίσθηση, για την γυναίκα, που μεγάλωσε σε ανάδοχες οικογένειες, αντιμετώπισε την κακοτυχία και την εγκατάλειψη και τελικά έπεσε θύμα ενός ανδρικού καπρίτσιου. Η άρνηση της Άγκνες Μαγκνομσντότιρ, να αποδεχτεί τη μοίρα της και να επικοινωνήσει, θα είναι ανάλογη με την κλιματολογική  περιγραφή. Τα χιόνια και το κρύο, θα δώσουν τη θέση τους σε μια αναλαμπή της άνοιξης, αντίστοιχα η απογοητευμένη, καταρρακωμένη γυναίκα, θα αποκτήσει την δική της θέση, μέσα στην αγροτική οικογένεια, αποδεικνύοντας έμπρακτα, ότι αποτελεί έναν εξ αυτών και καταρρίπτοντας τους μύθους, περί γυναίκας κτήνους και στυγνού δολοφόνου. Μέσα από την αφήγηση της, θα σκιαγραφηθεί το ζοφερό τοπίο, για την εργατική τάξη και ειδικότερα τις γυναίκες στην Ισλανδία των αρχών του 19^ου αιώνα. Θα παρατηρήσουμε την δύναμη της θρησκείας και των λειτουργών της σε τοπικό επίπεδο, την στείρα θέση της γυναίκας σαν μηχανή παραγωγής παιδιών και υπηρέτρια πολυτελείας αλλά και την δουλεία των ανδρών στο κλίμα της δύσβατης χώρας.

Το βιβλίο είναι μια διαδρομή στα Ισλανδικά βουνά. Με την συναισθηματική χιονοθύελλα να σε ραπίζει, και τις αναλαμπές καλοσύνης της οικογένειας των ανάδοχων δεσμοφυλάκων να σε ζεσταίνει. Η τραγικότητα του θανάτου, αποτυπώνεται εξίσου στην μελλοθάνατη αλλά και στον νεαρό πάστορα που αναλαμβάνει την πνευματική της καθοδήγηση, προσπαθώντας ο ίδιος να βρει τον δρόμο του ως άνθρωπος αλλά και ως ποιμένας ψυχών, , μέσα από ατελείωτες συζητήσεις μαζί της. Η αφήγηση της ιστορίας, δεν αφήνει ξεκάθαρη την ενοχή, αλλά και την πίστη στην δικαιοσύνη, επιβεβαιώνει όμως ,ότι το γκρίζο χρώμα της θάλασσας και το λευκό του χιονιού, εισχωρούν βαθιά στην καρδιά και το μυαλό του αναγνώστη.

Η Κέντ, σε αντίθεση με τις φιοριτούρες της Τζεην Όστιν, προτιμά να  μιλήσει για ένα έγκλημα τιμής (με βάση τα σημερινά δεδομένα) αποκαθηλώνοντας μια κοινωνία με κοινωνική αναλγησία απέναντι στις γυναίκες και τους φτωχούς. Ο κοινωνικός ρατσισμός, ο φόβος για το διαφορετικό το ξένο και η άγνοια, γίνονται θέματα ανάλυσης, με τρόπο γλαφυρό και αντικειμενικό. Ο φόνος δεν εξωραΐζεται, ούτε δικαιολογείται, αντίθετα η  ανθρώπινη πλευρά του εγκληματία, οδηγεί τον αναγνώστη, να ταυτιστεί με το μαρτύριο της αναμονής της Άγκνες Μαγκουάιρσον.

Ένα ηθογραφικό μυθιστόρημα, που φέρνει στο νου, τη δύναμη του Παπαδιαμάντη, τον κοινωνικό λυρισμό του Μαλό αλλά και την αίσθηση της κοινωνικής σκληρότητας του Ντίκενς. Πένα δουλεμένη, γλώσσα και μετάφραση άρτια, οδηγούν το «Αίσθημα ταφής» σε μια από τις καλύτερες προστάσεις για διάβασμα, ψυχαγωγία και σκέψη για τα τελευταία χρόνια και ειδικότερα τους χειμωνιάτικους μήνες.

ROYAL REBELS- "Royal rebels"

 

Four guys at San Jose, California, join their forces to a new band focused on rock n roll simplicity. , US Hard rock,  punk,blues, Southern, country and straight in your face no drills just thrills music. Based on some of the members past (STEELHEART) songs like "Devil got me by the balls" may surprise with the country blues sound. But this is an exercise in simplicity. Straight ahead rock n roll, less sleaze and more garage, less polished and more raw. The striped down to the bones production helps on the one hand to bring the bands sheer power to the front, on the other hand leaves the sound empty, reminding of a rehearsal recorded spontaneously. 

 

 

 

"We are '' the opener has the sound of a band I loved T.S.O.L in their more hard rock days. CIRCUS OF POWER are easily spotted as influences, check 'What you got", "Still running" along the bands of the same vein. "I cant breathe" is a fine example, of the bands social awareness and musical/political statement against brute force. Hard rock that stands and delivers based on raw power, gravy vocals and a rhythm section like a steamroller , no excuses and cover ups, just the power to shake your foundations like a good Japanese earthquake. If you like the before mentioned bands , ROYAL REBELS will be a great addition to your listening.

PREACHERS OF DISTORTION- "The wall of sound ritual"

 

With Coronavirus shattering dreams and lives , one man in London picked up his guitar and continue his journey to the city of distortion alone. Stripped down by his colleagues who couldn't get along, guitar mastermind (Redd Lao) of London based PREACHERS OF DISTORTION decided to record their new work on his own. The result is an album of sheer force. MOTORHEAD meets COC meets Desert sessions as his "power trio" attitude brings angry riffs and whiskey soaked vocals in a way Lemmy would have much approved. On the other hand the album has its more technical, guitar shredding melodic moments as in songs like "Cry from the womb". The main attitude is coming upfront in songs like 'As above,so below' and 'Ill be the first in line",true, angry,heavy rockers that could be in any ORANGE GOMBLIN, COC album. Sometimes vocals can be a bit weak like at the closing "Roots and memories' but they're from the heart.

 

 

If you' re in to straight in your face, heavy rock coming from the gutters, aggressive and disrespectful to modern trends, check PREACHERS OF DISTORTION. Riff loaded, over the top fuzz and distorted they got the guts and the beers for some good old time HEAD bangin.
